Iconic comedy actor Vadivelu has shed his comical avatar to embrace one of the most sombre performances in his career in the upcoming movie Maamannan. Written and directed by Mari Selvraj, Vadivelu's character in the movie draws inspiration from his iconic portrayal of Isakki in the Tamil classic Thevar Magan.
Vadivelu expressed his belief that his character's journey in Maamannan would evoke the same sympathy and remain as memorable as Isakki's in Thevar Magan. "Even to this day, I find myself moved to tears when watching Isakki's journey in Thevar Magan. That pain is present in Maamannan as well," Vadivelu shared with Galatta Plus.
The actor revealed that it was effortless for him to delve into the depths of his character, and not solely due to his exceptional acting skills honed over three decades. "This character fit seamlessly into my life, like a bandage soothing a broken leg. He is a resolute character, and as I lived his life, I grew incredibly fond of him," Vadivelu added.
"As an actor, I am always hungry for such roles," Vadivelu expressed, highlighting his eagerness to explore dramatic characters alongside his comedic portrayals.
He also expressed confidence in Maamannan's ability to resonate with people from across different walks of life as it draws from the harsh realities of our society. "I asked him if he had personally experienced a certain situation depicted in the film. He shared that it had happened to his father. As we were discussing it, we heard the news of a similar incident occurring in Tirunelveli. These events still occur sporadically. The film also sheds light on the collective pain experienced by all individuals," Vadivelu revealed.
Besides Vadivelu, the movie also stars Udhayanidhi Stalin, Keerthy Suresh and Fahadh Faasil in the lead roles. The movie is due in cinemas on June 29.
