After almost three years since its announcement, debutant director Devan’s film Valatty: The Tale of Tails, is gearing up for its release. The movie, which had already won attention for its plot and mainly its characters – all of whom are played by dogs, also has a stellar list of actors who have lent their voice for the canines.
Apart from the human characters in the film played by Vijay Babu and Akshay Radhakrishnan, the movie has a Golden Retriever, a Cocker Spaniel, a Rottweiler and a canine belonging to an indigenous breed as its main characters. Roshan Mathew, Soubin Shahir, Ranjini Haridas, Sunny Wayne, Raveena Ravi, Indrans and Saiju Kurup are some of the popular actors who have given voice to the dogs in the fun feel-good movie, produced by Friday Films.

What is Valatty: The Tale of Tails’ story?
The movie revolves around Tomy and Amalu – two dogs who fall in love but decide to elope after their ‘parents’ disapprove of their relationship. This takes them on an adventure as well as encounters with the Animal Birth Control department, leading to unravelling of further conspiracies and dangers. How the dogs find their way in the turbulent world form the plot of the film, which is also scripted by Devan.

The team had bought the dogs when they were pups and trained them specifically for the movie. Though it’s been three years, the filmmaker, in an earlier interview with OTTplay, told us that the shoot of the film actually took them less time compared to the pre- and post-production phases that took about one and a half years each.
“It’s an experimental movie and since no one has made such a movie yet, we had to learn everything by doing,” said Devan. “Unlike films like 777 Charlie, Valatty is told entirely from dogs’ perspectives.”
When and where to watch Valatty: The Tale of Tails?
Valatty, which was set to release on July 14 in theatres initially, will now hit theatres on July 21. Apart from Malayalam, the movie will also release in Tamil, Hindi, Kannada and Telugu. The release date of the other-language versions are yet to be confirmed.
