Actor-director Anoop Menon is gearing up for the release of his third film this year that is based on his own script. The upcoming movie Varaal, however, is also his biggest and most commercial movie till date.

Helmed by director Kannan Thamarakkulam, the film went on floors last year and boasts of a talented ensemble star cast featuring Prakash Raj, Renji Panicker, Madhuri Braganza, Sunny Wayne, Shankar Ramakrishnan, Senthil Ramakrishnan, Suresh Krishna and Sai Kumar.

Touted to be based on contemporary politics, the thriller, which has about 50 mainstream artistes, revolves around four major characters essayed by Anoop, Prakash Raj, Renji Panicker and Sunny Wayne. Prakash Raj will be seen playing the role of Kerala Chief Minister in the film, which is set for a theatrical release on October 14.

Madhuri Braganza, who had essayed a pivotal role in Joseph, plays the role of Mallika, who is Anoop Menon’s pair in the film. “Her character drives the plot of the film that tries to the highlight the various politics involved within Kerala politics,” Kannan had told OTTplay in an earlier interview.

The movie had kicked off shoot last year, while COVID-19 cases were surging. However, the team had taken adequate precautions to ensure that the shoot of the film was not interrupted. There were days where almost 100 artistes were on the set and each of them had taken RT-PCR test, according to the filmmaker.

Varaal also marks the comeback of PA Sebastian as a producer. He had previously backed Anoop Menon’s Trivandrum Lodge, which was directed by VK Prakash and also starred Honey Rose, Jayasurya and Bhavana.

Meanwhile, Varaal is scheduled to clash with Soubin Shahir and Arjun Ashokan’s Romanchan, which is helmed by debutant Jithu Madhavan, and Shine Tom Chacko and Lal’s Vichithram. Both movies are also set to hit theatres on October 14. Mammootty’s Rorschach is also expected to continue playing in maximum theatres next week.
