Popular Bollywood actor Varun Dhawan will follow suit of Bollywood heavyweights like Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn by stepping into the OTT platform. With Shah Rukh Khan also announcing his digital debut and OTT being the new normal, Varun Dhawan becomes the latest actor to jump on the OTT bandwagon.

According to Pinkvilla, Varun Dhawan will make his OTT debut with the international series Citadel, which also stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas. The series will stream on Amazon Prime Video and the actor, who was last seen in the comic caper Coolie No. 1 alongside Sara Ali Khan, will star in the American drama series conceptualised and helmed by Anthony and Joe Russo. The Russo brothers are known for creating four significant MCU movies, which include the titanic record-breaking box office hits, namely Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

The action-adventure espionage series will reportedly have a “mothership series” and localised “satellite series” to cater to the viewership of the respective local languages. The primary or “mother series” has Priyanka Chopra and Richard Madden locked and is currently being shot in the UK. The local versions of Citadel will be shot in India, Italy, and Mexico.

Dhawan will reportedly play the lead in the local Indian spin-off, which will be helmed by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK. The primary series will most likely drop on Amazon Prime in January 2022. Interestingly enough, crossovers with the main series and cross-references between the local versions will be there too, expanding the scope of the Citadel universe across geographical boundaries and cultural contexts. Word has it that the Indian version of Citadel will begin production in early 2022, but the cast and crew have not been officially announced yet.

Talking to indianexpress.com, Joe Russo had extolled Priyanka Chopra before beginning the shoot of the main series, describing her as an ‘incredible star.’ And that they are proud of the show and “excited for audiences to see it.”

On the work front, the Badlapur actor has just wrapped up shooting for Amar Kaushik’s Bhediya and Raj Mehta's Jug Jugg Jeeyo. He also featured in Mahesh Manjrekar’s Antim: The Final Truth’s Vighnaharta song, alongside Salman Khan and Aayush Sharma.
