Who would have thought that one of the most anticipated movies of the year, made on a massive budget with Atlee’s stamp on it, would struggle to even earn its first ₹50 crore worldwide—forget the thought of breaking even completely? Well, Baby John, which released on Christmas 2024, has suffered one of the lowest box office performances for any pan-India movie, and the way it has been rejected by the audience is not just shocking but worthy of dissection. The movie, starring Varun Dhawan alongside Keerthy Suresh and Wamiqa Gabbi, was one of the most awaited films during its production but failed to generate significant numbers. Now, it turns out that the film has been pulled from many theaters across the country and has lost over 2,000 shows just nine days after its release.

Baby John Loses 2,500 Show

You read that right. One cannot ignore that Baby John was released right in the middle of the raging box-office success of Pushpa 2: The Rule. But one must also note that even Mufasa: The Lion King, released on December 20, 2024, has managed to do business of over ₹100 crore in India. So, the fact that Baby John has failed to earn even ₹50 crore in almost 10 days is indeed very worrisome.

As per TOI, the movie has been removed from many single-screen theaters. Single-screen theater owners have decided to pull down Baby John as Pushpa 2 and Mufasa: The Lion King has dominated the screens. The report also claims that the Varun Dhawan-led movie has lost some 2,500 shows, which is a very upsetting update for the makers. This means the movie will face even more blows in the remaining days of its theatrical run because its visibility has been further diminished.

Baby John, which also stars Wamiqa Gabbi and Rajpal Yadav and is directed by Kalees, will be released on Christmas 2024. From Day 2, it started earning very low numbers. The film has not managed to find any redemption and continues to underperform at the box office, hinting that it might not even touch the ₹50 crore milestone in India by the end of its run.

As per Sacnilk, on Day 8 of release, which was also January 1, 2025, New Year’s holiday, Baby John managed to earn only ₹2.75 crore at the domestic box office. While this number is a surge from the ₹2.15 crore it earned on Day 7, it is far from being sufficient. On Day 9, which was January 2 (yesterday), the film dropped again, earning ₹1 crore at the domestic box office. The movie has managed a total collection of ₹36.40 crore by the end of Day 9. Thursday is being labeled as the lowest single-day collection for the movie.

Early estimates suggest that the movie, based on its performance, might struggle to earn ₹45–50 crore in total domestic collection by the end of its theatrical run. Regarding worldwide collection, the Varun Dhawan-led actioner might wrap up its run around ₹75 crore. These numbers are significantly lower than what the movie needs to earn to break even, let alone make a profit.

Interestingly, Baby John's opening day collection has turned out to be Varun Dhawan's best opening in the past five years. Bhediya earned ₹7.48 crore on its first day, while Jugjugg Jeeyo collected ₹9.28 crore on its opening day. This provides some redemption for the actor, even though the movie has failed to meet expectations after its release.
