The Great Indian Kitchen, the 2021 Malayalam film starring actors Suraj Venjaramoodu and Nimisha Sajayan, had opened a pandora box and initiated conversations surrounding the deep-rooted patriarchy and misogyny entrenched in domestic spheres of our society. While the film has been remade in several languages, the latest being in Hindi as Mrs, which is available on OTTplay Premium, Suraj recently opened about the conversations that the Malayalam version created.
The Great Indian Kitchen, directed by Jeo Baby, explores the oppressive and traditional role of women in Indian households, focusing on a young bride's experience within her new home. Played by Nimisha Sajayan, the protagonist finds herself trapped in a cycle of domestic chores, highlighting themes of gender inequality and patriarchy in her husband’s house, played by Suraj.
Suraj, who will be making his debut in Tamil with Veera Dheera Sooran, said, "It was a story that came during Covid, and my friend, Jeo Baby, asked if he could pitch me a character in a female-driven film he would be doing. Once I heard the story, I was in it immediately.”
The actor said it an issue to be told, and happy with how it was remade in several languages. "It is something that we see every day with women folks at homes. I did not expect the film will create so much conversations. A lot of men began to do house work after watching the film. Some of my friends realised how much their wives were working hard and began to help them. It is great the film created that change.”
The original version of the film is available for streaming on Prime Video. However, the remake versions in Tamil and Hindi are available on ZEE5 and OTTplay Premium at discounted prices.
The film was remade in Hindi by director R Kannan with Aishwarya Rajesh and Rahul Ravindran, while in Mrs, Sanya Malhotra played the lead in Hindi.
