National Award-winning Malayalam actor Suraj Venjaramoodu is making his Tamil film debut with the Vikram-led Veera Dheera Sooran Part 2, directed by SU Arun Kumar, of Sethupathi and Chiththa fame, after nearly a quarter century in cinema. While Suraj says that he’s been keen to collaborate with both Vikram and Arun, when the opportunity came up, there was a big problem – he knew no Tamil.

In fact, when Arun met Suraj to narrate the story, the actor gave him a patient hearing, but admits that he did not understand anything and decided to do the film after he asked the director if he suited the character. An answer in the affirmative is all that Suraj needed to sign up for the film. If that was bad, it was only going to get worse for Suraj when he actually began shooting for the film.

On Day 1, he had a few scenes with SJ Suryah, where he had very little to say. By day 2, though, Arun gave Suraj a ton of pages, with very many lines. If the sheer volume of lines was daunting, what was even more scary, says the Malayalam actor was that the entire sequence would be shot in a single take. “I had three attacks when I heard that,” laughed the actor, while in conversation with Indiaglitz Tamil.

Suraj jests that he tried making an escape from the set, but did not, as he was not familiar with the area in which they were shooting at. “We were shooting in the middle of a forest, so I came back and told Arun that I will do the scene. When we eventually shot it, I saw Arun in tears behind the monitor and when I asked, he said he needed another take. Normally, it takes a few hours to set up everything for a retake and it was already 4 am. To my surprise, everything was ready in the next half and hour and we did the scene again,” said Suraj. Yet again, Arun was in tears, but this time around, they were tears of joy, added Suraj.
