Director Shankar recently announced that his long-time dream project, the adaptation of novel Velpari, will be the next thing he will be working on. However, this project seems to a tough task for the filmmaker, given Shankar is coming from two box office failures; namely Game Changer and Indian 2. Who will be the takers for Shankar’s next film is a question that lingers in the dark.

Shankar announces his next but does it amp up the expectations?

Director Shankar’s films have been known by their extravaganza and grandeur. And likely so, his last two films Indian 2 and Game Changer were made on massive budgets. But unfortunately, both the film were box office disasters, making Shankar lose his image as a reputed storyteller. While Indian 2 was a follow up to his iconic film Indian starring Kamal Haasan in the lead role, Game Changer, the Telugu film starring Ram Charan, also did not give Shankar a good opening.

It is at this time, Shankar has announced in a recent event, that he will be doing his dream project as his next one. Velpari which is a historical novel on the Tamil Nadu ruler during the Sangam age, will be the subject for Shankar’s next. At an event to celebrate Velpari novel, which was also attended by Rajinikanth, Shankar announced that the novel penned by Su Venkatesan, has been his dream project for a while.

Shankar said that the film will be made on high-budget and will be on par if not more, than Hollywood productions like Game of Thrones and Avatar. While this seems apt for Shankar whose filmography is usually marked by grandness, the question looms over who will produce it. With both Game Changer and Indian 2, producers and banners will now be extra careful to trust Shankar with their funds. But given Shankar is also a director who has successfully pulled wonders like Indian, Jeans, I, and Muthalvan, one has to wait and see how his adaptation of Velpari will come to life.

What else did Shankar say about Velpari?

Shankar said that for long, Enthiran starring Rajinikanth was his dream project. But now, it has been Velpari. However, the filmmaker did not disclose any cast and crew associated with the project. The director said that Velpari should be included in school syllabus, and hoped many read it. Shankar said that had late journalist SS Vasan was alive today, he would have produced it, given Velpari holds much potential in production and execution. SS Vasan was founder of Vikatan, the legendary publication house which celebrated the landmark of selling one lakh copies of the novel.
