Veteran actress Anjana Bhowmick, 79, breathed her last at 10.30 am on Saturday in a private hospital in south Kolkata. She was admitted with breathing problems on Friday. The Sengupta family, along with members from the Bengali entertainment industry, including Srijit Mukherji, went to the hospital.
Anjana has been suffering from age-related problems for a long time. She was for a time being treated at home. She is survived by two daughters, Nilanjana and Chandana. Nilanjanaa is the wife of Jisshu U Sengupta.
Anjana was born in 1944 in Cooch Behar. Her original name was Arati. She debuted in films at the age of 20 with the film Anustup Chanda. She changed her name to Anjana before the film was released. Her pairing with Uttam Kumar was much acclaimed by the viewers and critics. Most of the films in her career were with Uttam Kumar. Many people believed that they had a unique chemistry. Srijit Mukherji, a close family friend of Jisshu and Nalanjanaa, pointed out, “Anjana Bhowmick was my favourite actress from the Golden Age. Her spontaneity and timing were exemplary and her chemistry with Uttam Kumar was the finest, I say this keeping Suchitra Sen, Supriya Devi, and Sabitri Chatterjee in mind. Rest in peace.”
Anjana Bhowmick also did a notable role opposite Soumitra Chatterjee in the film Mahasweta. The actress got married to a navy officer Anil Sharma. After her marriage, she stayed away f from the film world. She always believed that an actor’s success depends on how long the audience can wait. She was not seen much on screen after the ’80s.
Her glorious presence in Bengali cinema from the ’60s to the ’80s is still remembered by people. Her acting in films like Chowringhee, Thana Theke Aschi, and Nayika Sangbad was memorable. Anjana has been a recluse for many years. Her two daughters Nilanjana and Chandana came to acting. Nilanjanaa is now a successful producer in Tollywood. Her husband Jisshu Sengupta is a busy actor across India. A few years back, Jisshu and Nilanjanaa's daughter Sara made her debut in Tollywood with the film Uma. She is a budding model in the fashion industry.
