This Friday, February 14, the year's first historical drama, Chhaava, will hit theatres. The film portrays the narrative of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and features Vicky Kaushal in the titular role along with Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna in the key characters. Bollywood Hungama reports that the makers completed the censor edits well in advance.

CBFC certification and censor changes

Chhaava was certified U/A 16+ by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). However, the film required certain changes. They changed the conversation from "Mughal sultanat ka zehar" (The poison of the Mughal Sultanate) to "Uss samay, kayi shaasak aur sultanat khud ko zinda rakhne ki koshish kar rahe the." (At that time, many rulers and sultanates were trying to keep themselves alive.) A different line of speech, "Khoon toh aakhir Mughalon ka hi hai" (After all, the blood is that of the Mughals), was altered to read "Khoon toh hai Aurang ka hi." (After all, the blood is Aurangzeb's.)

The terms "haramzaadon" and "haramzaada" were toned down, and "Aameen" was substituted with "Jai Bhavani." In the first part, the makers were requested by the CBFC to remove a sequence portraying Maratha warriors wearing sarees, and they also rewrote some speeches.

Yes, there is more. "14 saal" was substituted with "16 saal," "24 saal ka ladka" was substituted for "22 saal ka ladka," and "kayi saal" was used instead of "9 saal."

Scene deletions and speech revisions

Finally, the members of the CBFC requested that the producers include an audio-text disclaimer identifying the source material and clarifying that the video does not attempt to smear anyone or misrepresent historical events.

On February 1, the producers of Chhaava received the censor certificate following the implementation of these revisions. The film clocks in at 161.50 minutes, that is, 2 hours, 41 minutes, and 50 seconds, as stated on the certificate.

Laxman Utekar, known for his work on Luka Chuppi (2019), Mimi (2021), and Zara Hatke Zara Bachke (2023), has helmed the film, which will hit theatres on February 14.
