The rights holders of Guru Dutt's film catalogue, Ultra Media & Entertainment Group, have begun talks with prominent filmmakers about a monumental biography of the late, outstanding filmmaker. The production business is planning to turn several of Dutt's critically acclaimed films into web series in addition to the biopic.

Guru Dutt's centenary celebrations beyond films

There will be more than just these events to commemorate the filmmaker's centenary year. A pioneer in Hindi film, Guru Dutt is best known for his groundbreaking works such as Pyaasa (1957) and Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959). His short career did not diminish the impact he had on subsequent generations of moviegoers and directors.

Enthusiasm for collaboration with passionate filmmakers

Rajat Agrawal, COO and Director of Ultra, expressed his enthusiasm at the idea of working with producers and a contemporary filmmaker who is a Guru Dutt devotee. He acknowledged that biopics usually provide a challenge due to the necessity to replicate an individual's grandeur and accomplishments.

In an interview with Mid Day, Agrawal has stated that talks with two filmmakers are continuing on the potential development of the biography and web series. He has had conversations with two renowned filmmakers who are considering adapting his films for the web and developing a documentary about his life. When they have a firmer plan, they can go into more depth. He also mentioned that they are communicating with his relatives.

Vicky Kaushal a potential choice to play Guru Dutt

Agrawal believes Vicky Kaushal would be excellent in the lead role, despite the fact that he has not received any official word regarding the casting. There is a lot of talent, so picking just one actor to play Dutt would be tough for him, but he believes Kaushal can convey the character's emotional depth.

This month at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, Ultra debuted restored versions of Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool, Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962). After the showcase, the filmmaker's films will be rereleased in Indian theatres as part of a year-long celebration of his centenary of birth.

Preserving the original aesthetic with a modern touch

Agrawal announced that to maintain the same vintage vibe, all of his films have been restored to their original black-and-white versions. Nevertheless, they are considering adding colour to a few songs to gauge how the audience responds. Notable filmmakers will participate in panel discussions and curate exhibitions centred around his enduring legacy.
