After a wait of almost two years, director Kannan Thamarakkulam’s drama-thriller Vidhi: The Verdict, which was earlier titled Maradu 357, is set to release. The movie, which has had to shift its release dates repeatedly due to the pandemic lockdown and limited screens due to the release of big movies, has finally zeroed in on a date ahead of the New Year.
The movie, based on the 2020 flat demolition of Maradu, Kochi, has a star cast featuring Anoop Menon, Manoj K Jayan, Sheelu Abraham, Dharmajan Bolghatty, Senthil Krishna and Baiju Santosh.
What is Vidhi’s story?
While the movie is based on the demolition of flat complexes in Maradu in 2020 due to the Supreme Court order for violating coastal regulation zone (CRZ) norms, it revolves around the impact the decision had on the lives of the residents in these flats.
In an earlier interview with OTTplay, Kannan said that the movie also focused on topics such as the importance of nature and the ecological impact of constructions. Though the delayed release date has dulled the peg a bit, the filmmaker said that the natural disasters plaguing Kerala in the past few years have also been addressed through the movie and this makes it relevant.
When is Vidhi releasing?
Vidhi is set to release in theatres across Kerala on December 30. Contrary to how other films have announced the release date at least a week prior to them hitting cinema halls, the team of Vidhi revealed the date only a day before the movie’s release.
This could have been prompted, keeping in mind the limited window available for release of smaller films. January 2022 already promises to be a busy month with movies such as Dulquer Salmaan’s Salute, Unni Mukundan’s Meppadiyan, Vineeth Sreenivasan’s Hridayam and Tovino Thomas’ Naaradhan set to release.
