What is Viduthalai 2 about?

Led by Vijay Sethupathi and Soori, Vetrimaaran’s two-part film follows the story about a rookie cop who is instrumental in the capture of a leader of the people’s movement and the subsequent events that take place. With Soori as constable Kumaresan, and Vijay as the leader Perumal ‘Vaathiyaar’, the film explores the former’s conflict about his duty as a police officer, and his empathy towards the people who’ve been bearing the brunt of police brutality, after Perumal’s heart-felt narrative about how he became the person that he is now.

While Gautham Vasudev Menon, Bhavani Sre, Rajiv Menon, Ilavarasu, Balaji Sakthivel, Saravana Subbiah, Chetan and Munnar Ramesh, joined the lead cast in reprising their roles from the original, the sequel saw the likes of Manju Warrier, Kishore, Bose Venkat,Vincent Asokan, Ken Karunas and Anurag Kashyap, among others, added to the cast.

The theatrical response to the Ilaiyaraaja musical, Viduthalai 2, was largely positive, although its preachy tone was not to everyone’s liking. The film was a commercial success, though. Viduthalai was Vetrimaaran’s maiden collaboration with both Soori and Vijay Sethupathi. The two-part film is an adaptation of the short story Thunaivan by writer Jayamohan. Like the first part, Viduthalai 2 also had its premiere at the International Film Festival of Rotterdam, before hitting theatres back home in India on December 20, 2024.
