The first instalment of Vetri Maaran's long-delayed raw and rustic action drama Viduthalai hit screens today. The film revolves around a police operation to capture a fugitive leader of a separatist group in a hilly terrain of Tamil Nadu. While Soori plays the lead role, Vijay Sethupathi plays Vaathiyar, the leader of the separatist group. Both the actors have been winning accolades for their performance.

 In the meantime, popular Malalayalam director Alphonse Putharen is all praise for both the actors. While he called Soori's transformation as evolution, he also saluted Vijay Sethupathi for his contribution to Tamil cinema. He stated that Sethupathi was part of every step of Tamil cinema as it inches towrds the next stage. In a tweet he wrote, “This is not transformation. This is evolution of Soori. Thank you #Vetrrimaaran sir for believing in him and making the way or paving the way for him to alter him. Sethu na #VijaySethupathi neenga illama Tamil cinema munnaadi pogathaa mathiri ungala uruvakunathuku oru salute (sic)”

Many have called Soori's character, a lifetime settlement for the ace comedian. The term shot to popularity in Lokesh Kanagaraj's action entertainer starring Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi and Fahadh Faasil.

During the audio launch of Viduthalai, Soori had stated that it was Vijay Sethupathi who encouraged him to experiment with roles.  He said, "When Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu released (Soori's debut film), Vijay Sethupathi mama had asked me to not confine myself to comedy roles. He said that I had a lot more potential that i thought and that I should experiment. On the sets of Viduthalai, I heard Vijay Sethupathi mama thanking Vetri Maaran sir, for making me the hero of the film. It's not often that you come across good souls like him."

The film also stars Bhavani Sre, Rajiv Menon, Gautham Menon, Chethan, Tamizh to name a few. Music for the film is by Ilaiyaraaja and cinematography by Velraj. The film is produced by RS Infotainment and Grass Root Film Company.
