Viduthalai Part 2: Vetrimaaran’s period action drama addresses themes like police brutality and anti-capitalism

The director’s cut of Viduthalai: Part 2, the 2024 Tamil period action thriller starring actors Soori and Vijay Sethupathi, is now out streaming on Prime Video. While the original version which is available on OTTplay Premium and Prime Video runs for two hours and 37 minutes, this extended director’s version is of three hours and 7 minutes.
Director Vetrimaaran known for his films like Asuran, Aadukalam and Vada Chennai , made a duology titled Viduthalai with Soori and Vijay Sethupathi. The second part released in theatres in December 2024, and subsequently began streaming on Prime Video and ZEE5. Now, in the latest, the director’s cut of Viduthalai: Part 2 is out on Prime Video. Additional footage of 30 minutes which did not feature in the theatrical version is now available for audience.
Viduthalai is a period action drama which revolves around a rookie cop called Kumaresan who is posted to capture the head of people’s movement Perumal Vaathiyar played by Vijay Sethuapthi. The duology, which has music by Ilaiyaraaja, talks about police brutality, communism, and anti-capitalism. Notably, Viduthalai: Part 1 marked the first time Soori started as lead actor, and went on to headline films like Garudan, Kottukkaali and Maaman.
Viduthalai: Part 1 is available for st reaming on OTTplay Premium at discounted prices. While Vijay Sethupathi’s role is minimal in the first part, his character has a predominant presence in the sequel. The duology stars Rajiv Menon, Gautham Menon, Bhavani Sre, Manju Warrier, Kishore, and Ilavarasu among others, in important roles.
Meanwhile, Vetrimaaran was announced to work with Suriya in Vaadivaasal. However, no further updates have been given by the makers since the announcement. There are also reports speculating that the director will team up with Thug Life actor Silambarasan. Vetrimaaran also has Vada Chennai sequel with Dhanush.
