Bollywood actress Vidya Balan expressed her love for Malayalam films in a video on social media on February 19. Her recreation of a hilarious scene from the 1991 Malayalam film Mookilla Rajyathu showed her interest in the South Indian film industry. “Been watching Malayalam films obsessively for the past 2 weeks, so this is my fun ode to my roots,” the actress wrote on Instagram.
Her admirers showered the comments section, praising the actress for recalling her origins and recommending a Malayalam movie for her to watch next. A few others mentioned how excited they were to see Vidya in a Malayalam project shortly. Some have also lauded her for perfectly recreating this iconic scene from Mookilla Rajyathu.
Although Vidya Balan was raised in Mumbai, her family is from Palakkad in Kerala. The Bhool Bhulaiyaa actress never missed an opportunity to show off her Malayali heritage on various occasions.
Vidya signed on to do twelve more Malayalam films after being cast as the female lead opposite Mohanlal in the film Chakram. However, the movie was put on hold because of issues with production.
It was unprecedented for a Mohanlal movie to be postponed in Malayalam cinema, and the producers blamed Vidya for bringing bad fortune to the film and replaced her in the roles she had been contracted for earlier. Another Malayalam movie for which she finished shooting in 2003, Mukesh’s Kalari Vikraman, was never released in theatres.

After establishing a career in Bollywood, Vidya appeared in a cameo role in Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Urumi as Makkom, aka Bhoomi, in 2011. She has not acted in a Malayalam project after this movie.
The actress recreated a hilarious scene from one of Malayalam’s classic comedies, Mookilla Rajyathu. Ashokan-Thaha has directed the film, which is available to stream on YouTube. Mukesh, Jagathy Sreekumar, Thilakan, Siddique, Rajan P Dev, and Jagadish played the lead roles in this 1991 film.
