Daali Dhananjaya 's fourth production venture - after Badava Rascal, Head Bush and Tagarupalya - and second featuring his good pal Nagabhushana in the lead, hit theatres on April 10, 2025. Directed by Esham and Haseen, the pair that made the lockdown comedy Ikkat, also with Nagabhushana, Vidyapati was one of two Kannada films, the other being Agnyathavasi, that released along with Ajith’s Good Bad Ugly, as well as the Vishu presentations from Malayalam cinema, like Alappuzha Gymkhana, Maranamass and Bazooka.
Vidyapati opened to decent reviews, but thereafter there was no word from the team, almost as if they’d given up on the film once it hit theatres. This despite the fact that it did not have a streaming partner mentioned in the credits at the time of the release. On the contrary, Hemanth M Rao, the producer of Agnyathavasi, who had sold his film to Zee Network earlier, kept up promotions well after the release.
Vidyapati has now dropped on OTT, as of May 3, 2025, and as expected, it is available on Amazon Prime Video, which hosted Nagabhushana’s Tagarupalya as well. The OTT release is well within the one month from theatrical outing window. It is expected to be on the platform for 6 months and is currently available with Kannada and Telugu audio. Earlier, When Tagarupalya’s Prime Video contract ran out, Dhananjaya had posted the film on his banner’s official YouTube page.
Vidyapati paired Nagabhushana with Malaika Vasupal, of Hitler Kalyana fame, who made her big screen debut opposite Chikkanna with the hit comedy Upadhyaksha . She played Vidya, a superstar heroine, with Nagabhushana her arrogant husband, living a life of luxury, thanks to her star status.
What happens when their paths cross with that of thug Jaggu (KGF and Zebra's Garuda Ram) forms the crux of the narrative. Dhananjaya had a fun cameo as Anaconda, a vagabond fighter, who is enlisted to train Nagabhushana. The film also stars Girish Jatti, Bindu Raxidi, Dharmanna Kadur and Srivatsya Shyam, among others.
