Kannada cinema’s Chinnari Muttha Vijay Raghavendra had just finished up some acting commitments and joined his wife Spandana in Bangkok, where she had been holidaying with a few cousins and extended family, when tragedy struck. On the morning of August 7, Spandana suffered a massive heart attack that she did not survive. Back home, when news of her passing broke, the first question on everyone’s mind was if Vijay was with her at the time. Spandana had apparently slipped away in her sleep, was the initial reportage and that Vijay was en route to Bangkok to complete formalities and bring her mortal remains back.
Vijay, who has now begun promoting his next release Kaddha Chithra, which will be in theatres on August 8, is also facing questions about whether he was with Spandana during her last moments. Speaking to a Kannada television channel, the actor opened up and said that he was indeed with her and that he realized she was slipping away when he tried to wake her up to check out of the hotel they were staying at. Spandana, he says, was unresponsive with a very low pulse, a situation in which he blanked out for a few moments. He couldn’t move or react, unsure of what to do. By the time, he pulled himself together and rushed her to hospital, she was no more.
Although it is not even month since he lost his wife, Vijay is doing his bit to publicize his next, as he believes it is something Spandana would have wanted him to do. His late wife, he says, had taken an extra interest in the styling of his character in the film. Vijay plays an author who deals with a plagiarism accusation in the film by director Suhas Krishna.
