After the strict COVID-19 restrictions, the Tamil Nadu government has finally allowed the reopening of movie theatres with a new set of rules and regulations. Theatres can function with 50% capacity from Monday onwards. This is big news for filmmakers and movie lovers as they get to watch their favourite stars on the big screen.

More than 40 new films are slated for a theatrical release in a row which have been stalled due to the pandemic-induced lockdown and restrictions. The release date of Vijay Sethupathi’s Laabam has been announced and it is expected to be released on September 9, 2021. This is likely to be the first big-budgeted Tamil flick to be released in theatres after the lockdown.

Veteran actor Vijay Sethupathi will essay the role of a social activist who fights for farmers and innocent people. The film also sheds light on how corporate and industrial sectors plunder the resources for their own greedy gain. Shruti plays the role of a journalist in the movie. The movie is helmed by late S.P. Jananathan who passed away on March 14, this year following a cardiac arrest. The shoot of the movie was completed last year and makers intended for the film to be released in theatres. The film also marks the second collaboration between director and actor. They have earlier worked on the movie Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai.

Laabam will also feature Prithvi Pandiarajan, Daniel Annie Pope, Jagapathi Babu, Ramesh Thilak, Harish Uthaman, Sai Dhansika and others. The movie is bankrolled by Vijay Sethupathi under the banner of VSP Productions along with Arumuga Kumar’s 7C’s Entertainment Pvt Ltd. The music is composed by D. Imman and the cinematography is by Ramji.
