What is Vijay Varma’s Matka King based on?
Do not go by the conventional name, for there is nothing conventional about this matka. Here, matka does not represent the clay pot but instead is about a cotton trader who starts a gambling game which is called Matka. Set in the 1960s, the series is about betting on cotton's opening and closing rates. The focus, of course, is on New York Cotton Exchange and Bombay Cotton Exchange. The system worked on pulling random slips from the matka. The series explores how every man got involved in the gamble in times where the rich and elite dared to. In short, the matka system was power before stock markets and Harshad Mehta's story, like told in Pratik Gandhi-Hansal Mehta's Scam 1992, took place.
A similar project in Tollywood
Interestingly, there is also a Telugu drama based on the Matka system. This Varun Tej-led film would explore the gambling culture from 1950-1980s. The movie is helmed by Karuna Kumar.

Directed by Sairat helmer Nagraj Manjule, Matka King also stars Kritika Kamra, Gulshan Grover, Sai Tamhankar and Siddharth Jadhav in pivotal roles. The series is backed by Siddharth Roy Kapur and will be out on Prime Video. There is currently no update on when would this show feature, but an announcement for the same is expected soon.
