Director Vijeesh Mani’s Puzhayamma is the latest Malayalam film to release directly on OTTs. The social and environmental drama, which has child artiste Meenakshi and Linda Arsenio in the lead, dropped on Jio Cinema on July 1.
The film revolves around the bond of a 13-year-old girl and an American tourist, and the challenges they have to encounter as they try to save a polluted river.
The movie, which is completely shot in a river, according to the makers, is also the first-of-its-kind to achieve the feat. Vijeesh has also tried to create records with his previous films.
His 2017 movie Vishwaguru held the record for the fastest film produced while his movie Netaji was the first movie in Irula language. His recent movie Namo, which has Jayaram in the lead, was made in Sanskrit and was also screened at IFFI Goa in 2020.
Puzhayamma marks his second environmental film after Thamara. The latest release, which is scripted by Prakash Vadikkal, also has Thampy Antony, Prakash Chenghal, Roji P Kurian and Unniraja in pivotal roles.
The film is part of Jio Studios’ Malayalam Mojo in Jio Cinema. The OTT platform has already released Nivin Pauly’s Kayamkulam Kochunni, Dileep’s Kammarasambhavam and Unni Mukundan’s Clint. Kalidas Jayaram’s Mr and Ms Rowdy and Sreenivasan’s Kuttymama are other two films, which are set for July 4 and July 7 releases, respectively. All these films are available with English subtitles.
