Tamil superstar Vikram teased his fans on Sunday with hints of a potential sequel to his 2022 hit, Mahaan. He shared glimpses from a photoshoot showcasing his transformation into an aged Gandhi Mahaan, evident from the diminished muscle mass and abundance of grey hair. Captioning the post with "Mahaan2!!?," Vikram sparked speculation about the sequel.
This post followed a celebration of the movie's second anniversary the day before, where Vikram expressed gratitude to director Karthik Subbaraj for creating one of his favourite characters in Mahaan. Subbaraj reciprocated the sentiment, praising Vikram as a "supreme performer."
In light of the potential Mahaan 2, fans fervently requested a theatrical release before any digital distribution. The original Mahaan premiered directly on streaming in February 2022 due to pandemic constraints, a decision that didn't sit well with the cast and crew. Producer SS Lalit Kumar's firm decision left little room for discussion.
Karthik Subbaraj had previously considered delaying post-production to ensure a theatrical release , but his commitment to his work and support for the producer prevailed. Lalit Kumar, however, acknowledged regrets about the OTT release, recalling a scolding from Thalapathy Vijay .
"When Mahaan was released on OTT, Vijay sir called and scolded me. He thought it was a mistake to release such a film on OTT, instead of in cinemas. I regretted that decision after that," he had said.
Mahaan unfolds the story of Gandhi Mahaan, raised in a family proclaiming devotion to Gandhi but failing to embody his principles. Breaking free from their control, Mahaan lives life on his terms. The narrative takes a twist when his grown son seeks vengeance for his mother's abandonment. The film marked Vikram's first onscreen collaboration with his son Dhruv. The film also features Simran, Bobby Simha, while Sananth, Vettai Muthukumar, Deepak Paramesh and Aadukalam Naren.
Currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video, Mahaan explores themes of familial dynamics, personal freedom, and the consequences of blind devotion.
