While some attribute the dip in sales to the usual weekday trend, other reports claim that Ponniyin Selvan: 1 or PS1 is offering stiff competition at the box office.

The Bollywood box office is currently witnessing the clash of two big films in the form of Vikram Vedha and Ponniyin Selvan: 1. Both ventures boast of big league stars and have released in theatres with prior reputations and are starkly different from one another in terms of both tone and sensibility but, apparently, Mani Ratnam's ambitious project is proving to be a bit of a party-pooper for the Hrithik Roshan - Saif Ali Khan starrer.
According to the latest trade reports, Vikram Vedha has seen a discouraging 61% drop on Monday (Day 4, October 3) and the upcoming prospects are suddenly looking bleak as far as the box office is concerned. Despite the positive critical reviews and word-of-mouth publicity, the action-thriller has somehow failed to live up to the expectations and ended up collecting only Rs. 5.4 crores (approx.) on Monday to take the domestic earnings to Rs. 42.3 crores (net).
The first three days of Vikram Vedha's theatrical run fetched close to Rs. 37 crores but the sudden dip in sales on Monday has come as a shocker to trade analysts. While some attribute this to usual weekday trend of drop in ticket sales, other reports claim that Ponniyin Selvan or PS1 is offering stiff competition at the box office.
Originally made in Tamil, Ponniyin Selvan 1 has been dubbed and released in four other languages including Hindi. While the Tamil version remains the biggest contributor to the box office collections, the Hindi dubbed release too has fared quite well and reportedly, earned the makers close to Rs. 10 crores (net) so far. Ponniyin Selvan 1 (Telugu) too has yielded great results and is said to have collected over Rs. 12 crores to date.
Coming back to Vikram Vedha, the same trade reports estimate that the film will continue to stay afloat through the week and earn approximately close to Rs. 6 crores on Day 5. Directed by Pushkar-Gayathri, Vikram Vedha is the remake of the 2017 film of the same name.
