Vikramaditya Motwane is considered to be one of the prolific filmmakers in Bollywood. There are a few of his contemporaries who have been termed as the 'thinking man's filmmaker'. He announced his arrival in the showbiz land with the critically acclaimed 'Udaan'. It's quite a thing that it was his film 'Udaan' that empowered him with 'wings' to fly in Bollywood. As they say, ‘nothing succeeds like success’. Likewise, after the success of this film, there was simply no looking back. This was followed by his other films like ‘Lootera’, ‘Trapped’, ‘AK vs AK’ and ‘Bhavesh Joshi Superhero’.
Speaking of ‘Lootera’, despite coming from the director who had made films like ‘Udaan’ and ‘Trapped’, the film did not meet with the expected success at the box-office. The film ‘Lootera’ (which was based on the well acclaimed author O Henry’s 1907 short story ‘The Last Leaf’, went onto get a rather mixed response at the box office. In an interview with ‘Humans of Cinema, Vikramaditya Motwane analysed and clarified about t wo of his films- ‘Lootera’ and ‘Bhavesh Joshi Superhero’.. Whilst speaking about ‘Lootera’, he said that many had assumed that the film had failed because of the hummongius expectations they had for a Ranveer Singh film. He exp lained it saying, “When Lootera came out, everyone was like, ‘Flop, flop, flop’. The fact of the matter is the film actually made money. Nobody lost money on that film. It’s just that the fact that being Ranveer Singh’s next film or Sonakshi Sinha’s next film, there were expectations of a Rs 30 crore weekend, but it didn’t happen. That’s not that film, anyway. It was clear when you read the script that it isn’t going to be that kind of film.”
Moving on to his other film, ‘Bhavesh Joshi Superhero’, Vikramaditya Motwane said that marketing plays a huge part in a lot of movies and that he believed some of ‘BhaveshJoshi Superhero’s’ failure was its marketing failure as well. He added that ‘there was something that didn’t click in the sense of being able to tap into the real audience that might have come in had they known the thing’. In the same breath, he added that the song was a bad idea. For the unversed, ‘Bhavesh Joshi Superhero’ starred Harshvardhan Kapoor, Nishikant Kamat, Priyanshu Painyuli and Ashish Verma in the lead roles. In addition to this star cast, the film also had a special song which was picturised on Arjun Kapoor.
Presently, Vikramaditya Motwane is all geared up for ‘Jubilee’. The show stars Prosenjit Chatterjee, Aditi Rao Hydari, Aparshakti Khurana, Wamiqa Gabbi, Sidhant Gupta, Ram Kapoor, Shweta Basu Prasad and Nandish Sandhu among others. It is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
