On Instagram in February, Vikrant Massey – who rose to fame after the theatrical success of his 2023 film 12th Fail, shared a new clip from the upcoming film titled The Sabarmati Report with co-stars Ridhi Dogra and Raashii Khanna. The clip paid tribute to the 59 innocent victims of the tragic Godhra train burning incident that occurred 22 years ago. May 3, 2024, was declared as the release date of the film. However, a fresh report believes that Vikrant Massey starrer The Sabarmati Report has been delayed.
According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has expressed to the makers of the film that the release date of the theatrical should be pushed forward to a later date as the content can violate ‘Model Code of Conduct’ - which is in place due to the forthcoming Lok Sabha Elections.
“The makers applied for a certificate at the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Its Examining Committee saw the film and had objections to certain scenes. Also, fearing that it might violate the Model Code of Conduct as laid down by the Election Commission of India, it has been advised that it should be released after the last phase of elections, which will take place on June 1,” read the report.
The Censor Board has reportedly also expressed concerns that specific scenes in the movie could potentially offend the sentiments of a certain section of society in general. Now, only time will tell whether these scenes will be reshot or not.
As per the film's promotions, Vikrant could be seen playing the role of Samar Kumar, a Hindi journalist, reporting the news on the day of the Godhra accident in 2002. The film portrays the events surrounding the Sabarmati Express near the Godhra railway station in Gujarat, India. The video ends with text reminding viewers of the tragedy that occurred on February 27, 2002, and the subsequent investigations and reports that followed.
