Well before Kannada superstar Kiccha Sudeep’s 3D fantasy-action-adventure released in theatres, the hype surrounding it was such that the makers were able to see the Kannada digital and satellite rights to Zee5 and Zee Kannada respectively. The deal, we are told was for the Kannada version only, although all south could just be available on Zee5 eventually. The Hindi version, however, was to be sold to another platform.
The film, which released in theatres on July 28 to mixed reviews owing to its strong resemblance to director Anup Bhandari’s debut directorial Rangitaranga, had a fairly decent run at the box office, with varying reports pegging its business between Rs 100 and Rs 200 crore. The makers are yet to announce the final figure. As of today, though, it’s been announced that Zee5 has zeroed in on a streaming date for Vikrant Rona. It couldn’t have been any better, because the platform has chosen Sudeep’s birthday as the big day. Vikrant Rona will start streaming on September 2.
Vikrant Rona has music by Ajaneesh Loknath and cinematography by William David, two of its greatest highlights. The narrative of the film unfolds in a village called Kamarottu, where young children go missing and are then found dead. It is believed to be the handiwork of a Brahmarakshasa (demon), until a new police inspector, Vikrant Rona, takes charge and decides to dig deeper into this mystery. Getting to the bottom of it, though, comes at great personal cost for Vikrant.
The film also starred Nirup Bhandari, Madhusudan Rao, Neetha Ashok, Ravishankar Gowda, Siddu Moolimani, Milana Nagaraj, with Bollywood actress Jacqueline in a pivotal cameo, including the hit special number, Gadang Rakkamma.
Prior to the release of Vikrant Rona, Sudeep had said that he and Anup would be collaborating on a series of films, namely Billa Ranga Baasha, which was to have been their first together, and Ashwatthama, as well as a possible sequel to Vikrant Rona. The actor is also set to work with Maanadu maker Venkat Prabhu’s and is reportedly in Rakshasudu 2. There are whispers of a multi-film deal with Satya Jyothi Films also, but none of this has been officially announced yet.
