Amidst a flurry of box office duds in April, there was only Telugu film that brought respite to the industry - Virupaksha. Directed by Karthik Dandu (who helmed Bham Bholenath earlier), the film starred Sai Dharam Tej, Samyuktha Menon, Sai Chand, Ajay, Sunil and others in key roles. The supernatural thriller was produced by Bvsn Prasad under Sri Venkateswara Cine Chitra.

After noticing its success in the Telugu version, the film, which had music by Kantara fame Ajaneesh Lokanath, was dubbed in multiple languages and opened to impressive responses in Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam markets. On the whole, the film went onto gross over Rs 100 crore at the box office, helping Sai Dharam Tej register his career-best box office figures for a film. Within a month of its theatrical release, Virupaksha is now out on OTT.

Netflix acquired the post-theatrical streaming rights of the thriller and premiered the film on May 21 (today). Driven by a fantastic screenplay, Virupaksha constantly stayed true to the spirit of the story without trying to pander to the galleries. Despite bagging an ‘A’ certificate from the censors, it didn’t dent its financial prospects and was widely watched by audiences across all age groups.

The film revolves around Surya (Sai Dharam Tej), who along with his mother visit their ancestral village Rudravanam and he later falls for Nandini(Samyuktha Menon). A series of deaths shocks the village and the temple head declares no one can enter or leave the village for eight days. Surya takes the situation into his hands and tries to find the truth behind these deaths.

“Virupaksha is a breath of fresh air amidst the plethora of commercial films that are made in Telugu cinema. The mystical thriller has a great storyline, spellbinding music score, and arresting narration. Barring a few issues with the pace, Virupaksha is a film that should be enjoyed on the big screen. Go for it,” OTTplay’s reviewer stated.
