The duo’s Gatta Kusthi revolved around wrestling and was a commercial success in 2023
Actor Vishnu Vishal and director Chella, who earlier worked in sports drama Gatta Kusthi, are set to reunite once more for a film, the actor’s home banner Vishnu Vishal Studioz announced on social media on Tuesday.
The upcoming film is yet-to-be titled and tentatively goes by the name Vishnu Vishal Studioz Production 11 (VVS11). The makers have not revealed any details of the film, with the project being in its initial stages. It is to be noted that Gatta Kusthi too was backed by VV Studioz in association with Ravi Teja’ RT Team Works.
Gatta Kusthi released in January 2023 and starred actor Aishwarya Lekshmi as the female lead. The film revolves around a patriarchal husband who marries his wife without knowing that she is wrestling champion. The family drama, focussed on the misogynistic nature of the protagonist’s household and how she overcomes to win laurels as a wrestler. Gatta Kusthi turned out to be one of the biggest successes in Vishnu Vishal’s career. The film holds the record for being the third highest watched film on Netflix in 2023, and also the topping record for the highest watched single language film (Tamil) on the platform for the same year, as per the press note issued by the makers.
A cricketer himself, Vishnu Vishal is one of the few Tamil actors who has starred in many sports-based films in his career. His debut and breakthrough performance were the 2009 film Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu in which he played a kabaddi player. Following this, he played an aspiring cricketer in Jeeva, and will once again wield the bat for the upcoming film Lal Salaam, scheduled to release on February 9. It is yet to be confirmed if his upcoming project with Chella will also be a sports drama or will take on any other genre.
