We Were The Lucky Ones is based on the harrowing true story of one Jewish family’s arduous efforts to reunite amidst the ongoing chaos and massacre of World War 2. A limited series adaptation of Georgia Hunter’s eponymous novel based on her grandfather Addy Kurc’s adventures, it was written and executively produced by Erica Lopez, who also serves as its showrunner.

With a swift yet thorough glimpse of the show’s premise, it is expected to closely follow the novel and remain true to its vision.

The Contents of the Trailer and the Show’s Plot

We Were The Lucky Ones follows the tale of the Kurc family, comprising of mother Nechuma, father Sol, protagonist Addy and his elder brother Genek and his wife Herta, his sister Mila and her husband Selim and baby Felicia, his brother Jakob and his youngest sister Halina, another protagonist of the show. The novel follows the tale of this large Jewish family and their struggles to survive and get back together.

We Were The Lucky Ones is led by Logan Lerman and Joey King, so it is expected they will play the roles of Addy and Halina. The rest of the family also features a talented cast who prove their mettle via angsty and heart-touching performances, as the Kurc family is shown in the trailer enjoying a life before WWII, during the Second World War and after it.

Though not much is known, except by fans of the original book, about the fate of the family members, the trailer shows several near-tearjerker moments as the young individuals survive starvation, torture, ghettos, and whatnot. Still, the film does not stray from its hopeful purpose and emanates an atmosphere of faith, love, and endless belief.

In a time when cellphones did not exist and all of Europe was shattered and war-ravaged, the true tale of a family finding each other against all odds amidst mass Jewish massacres is truly inspiring and heart-touching. We Were The Lucky Ones appears to be a promising war drama based on true events, especially for viewers who adore dramatic and tear-inducing true tales of survival.
