A new teaser of director Steven Spielberg's West Side Story dropped on Wednesday. Adapted from the 1957 musical of the same name, the clip introduces the love story of the lead characters blossoming in the pond of fierce rivalries.
In the teaser, we see Tony and Maria, smitten by each other and waiting to dance together at what seems like a prom, filled with vibrant individuals dancing and having fun, indicating that the movie will stay true to its musical foundation, with lots of dance, drama, music and emotions.
Watch the special look here:
Set in 1957 New York City, the story revolves around the young love between two rival gang members, who fall for each other despite being related to feuding street gangs, The Jets and The Sharks.
While Maria is a part of the Puerto Rican migrants who came to New York post-WWII in search of a new life, Tony is the leader of a gang of local boys known as the Jets. Tony’s old friends are engaged in a heated struggle for control of a neighbourhood against Puerto Rican rivals, the Sharks, led by Maria’s brother Bernardo.
Combining the best of both worlds, Broadway and Hollywood, the movie has an incredible cast and crew at its core - from screenplay by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Tony Kushner, direction by Steven Spielberg and musical choreography by Tony Awardee Justin Peck, to a star-studded ensemble, including Ansel Elgort as Tony, Rachel Zegler as María, along with Ariana DeBose, Ana Isabelle, David Alvarez, Mike Faist and Rita Moreno.
The reimagining of the popular musical, West Side Story is set to hit the theatres in the US on December 10, while the release date in India is still awaited.
