She started off as a digital content creator and then went on to explore the standup comic scene extensively. So, now, actor Mallika Dua feels she has been stereotyped, with multiple offers for comic roles coming her way for films and web series. While Mallika is still facing constant challenges while dealing with her onscreen image of being a comedian, she shared with OTTplay how she deals with this and that in the new web series, she's got to do something different from what she's done so far.
Asked how she is breaking out of the image of a comedian, Mallika said, "Well, I have my way to deal with it because I am a trained actor and I have studied acting. But when it comes to breaking the mould, I realised that if you are good at comedy, it leaves a lasting impact on the minds of the audience. I know that not everyone can do comedy well, and that one requires a special talent for that. So, instead of looking at it as a stereotype, I look at it as an abundance, and I am working on myself to get more opportunities. I approach directors and ask them to audition me for roles other than just comic ones. I think the more I audition, the more work I will get."
Mallika has been a part of Bollywood films like Hindi Medium, Namaste England, Zero, and Indoo Ki Jawani. She has also starred in web series like The Trip (Seasons 1 and 2), the Indian adaptation of The Office.
In Badtameez Dil, she plays Barun Sobti's character, Karan's, best friend. The story of the show is set in London and revolves around Liz (Ridhi Dogra) and Karan, who are poles apart when it comes to their approach to love.
Directed by Prashant Bhagia and produced by Ektaa R Kapoor, Badtameez Dil also stars Minissha Lamba. It is available to stream on Amazon miniTV.
