Aamir Khan and Farhan Akhtar came closest to working as actors in Rang De Basanti.

Farhan Akhtar has currently built a successful professional relationship with filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. When the two came together, they created something as inspiring as Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. Now they are set to work on Toofaan. Before its release, Rakeysh made an itsy-bitsy revelation. He stated that Farhan was roped in for Rang De Basanti, which starred Aamir Khan in the lead role.
No, Rakeysh did not approach Farhan for the role of DJ, but his BFF Karan Singhania. The role, of course, eventually went to South Indian actor Siddharth.
Back then, Rakeysh revealed in an interview with PTI, that Farhan did not even think about acting. He had just tasted success as a director with Dil Chahta Hai and was looking forward to Hrithik Roshan’s Lakshya, without a thought of exploring himself as an actor. Eventually, Farhan did make his acting debut with Rock On!! in 2008 and received critical acclaim for the same.
“He was truly amused,” recalled the director, pointing out that Farhan had a ‘twinkle in his eyes.’ However, the filmmaker stressed that the Don director was not ready for acting back then.
The closest that Farhan and Aamir have come to collaborating as actors was for Dil Dhadakne Do. While Farhan had a brief role in the Zoya Akhtar directorial, Aamir gave voiceover to the Mehra family’s doggo, who was also the narrator of the film.
