Bharat Ratna awardee, legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar once sang together with the Indian cricket team after they brought home the world cup in 1983. This song, titled Bharti Vishwa Vijeta, was composed and written specifically for the team. New archival footage that has gone viral on the interwebz records how the team crooned the number in perfect harmony with the ‘Nightingale of India’, who passed away at the age of 92 on February 6.
Nitin Mukesh and Suresh Wadkar have also lent their voices to the song.
This concert, which took place in Delhi, was arranged as part of a fundraiser by Mangeshkar after the cricketing board awarded only a sum of Rs 25000 to the players. Mangeshkar, reports state, presented each member of the team with Rs 1 lakh.
Her appreciation for the sport found expression in several other incidents. Former Indian captain Dilip Vengsarkar revealed that the singer invited several of the players over for lunch after Vengasarkar scored his third century at the Lord's cricket ground. She also personally congratulated every player after the 1983 win and in 1979, when the Indian team bested Pakistan in a match in Mumbai.
Mangeshkar passed away in Mumbai’s Breach Candy hospital because of multiple organ failure, days after recovering from COVID-19. A state funeral was held on Sunday, and a two-day national mourning has also been declared.
