Kiccha Sudeep and filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma are known to share great camaraderie off the screen. The two have worked together on a number of interesting films such as Phoonk, Rann, and Rakta Charitra, etc. and the former has often cited Varma as a mentor of a kind who gave him his first break in Hindi cinema. And both Sudeep and RGV are known to be fiercely opinionated and the Vikrant Rona star spoke of one such instance to explain the candor with which they interact with one another.

Sudeep, while speaking to a popular Kannada news channel, was asked about his equation with Ram Gopal Varma and the general nature of their conversations. When the interviewer implied that the filmmaker’s lack of political correctness tends to make things a little awkward for those around, Sudeep said in defense (although in jest):

“He’s an outspoken man, sir. And yet, there’s so much to learn from but he has chosen a life like that – be it the way he sends out those tweets or in general. We had gotten together very recently and he is quite candid and easygoing with me. He was here to watch Vikrant Rona and we were up till morning discussing our film and cinema in general – despite the image he has today, I have never heard him say anything silly to date”.

Sudeep went on to speak about Ram Gopal Varma’s startling choice of films, especially for a filmmaker who is known to have delivered some of the most iconic films of the past three-odd decades. Although still prolific at his craft, Varma’s films of the recent past are considered to be nothing of the old kind and his fans continue to urge him to get back to his original zeal.

“The two of us have this debate constantly and recently, I happened to ask him when he plans on making “cinema”. ‘What do you mean?’ asked RGV and I replied that we all fans love him for films like Shiva, Kshana Kshanam, Sarkar, Rangeela, etc. but after making a film like Satya, his interests as a director lay only in the true story space. I told him that he has forgotten that entire genre of fictional cinema that he owned as a filmmaker – in fact, there used to be a “Ram Gopal Varma” kind of a film that only he could make. I asked him why he left all that behind – you wouldn’t believe it but he went quiet for some time after that.”

“I added that he has experimented with all kinds of films in the last 10-15 years and it’s time to get his old mojo back. All the fans are still eagerly looking forward to his trademark stuff and I pushed him for answers that night. I genuinely believe that he is capable of giving us many more great films – in fact, I feel he is a man of intelligence and that’s why he is one among the very few whom I show my films to. Another man of this kind is Ramesh Aravind sir. I respect his speech and how dignified he is in general – be it the way he regards his juniors with respect or his love for cinema. One gets to learn a lot when they show their work to such individuals,” said Kiccha Sudeep in the interview.
