Once the Oscar nominations are out, there’s generally an increased interest in where to watch the nominated titles in different categories. While mainstream movies either would have had theatrical releases and landed on some OTT platform also by now, the more niche ones, find a theatrical audience in other parts of the world closer to the awards. The Oscar-nominated film Anatomy of a Fall, for instance, will be in theatres this week.

Short films – both live-action and animated – and documentaries are not always that lucky with a streaming partner, so you may not find all of them easily available. One of five Oscar-nominated live-action short films The After is currently available to stream on Netflix. The film is nominated along with The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, Red, White and Blue, Knight of Fortune and Invincible.

Directed by Misan Harriman, with David Oyelow in the lead as a former high-flying executive, whose life takes a drastic turn when his young daughter becomes a victim in a knife attack and his wife commits suicide thereafter. The British short film explores grief and how to deal with it through its protagonist in its 18-minute run-time. What David, as Dayo, does in the aftermath of the tragedy that struck him – a broken man navigating through life as a ride-share driver - is what The After is about.

Reviews of The After, which also stars Jessica Plummer, Amelie Dokulo, Ellen Francis, Dominique Tipper, Sule Rimi, Nikesh Patel, Ravi Singh, Izuka Hoyle, among others, have been largely positive, with critics pointing out that that more screen time and character development for Dayo would have done wonders to the film. Yet surprisingly, it does not score high on the Internet Movie Database rating.

The 96thAcademy Awards are on March 11, 4.30 am onward (IST) and will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, his fourth time at the helm of affairs of the marquee Hollywood event.
