Anurag Kashyap has called the concept of pan-India films 'massive scam.' The filmmaker, last seen acting in Haddi alongside Nawazuddin Siddiqui (Costao), who quit Bollywood recently, spoke about Indian cinema trying to sell a movie by calling it 'pan-India' but in reality, he believes that is a 'massive scam.' Why do you think the filmmaker feels that way? Here's exploring the same...
Anurag Kashyap is the latest to show his dislike for the term 'pan-India.' The filmmaker told The Hindu, "For me, pan-India is a massive scam. Pan-India is a term. A film is pan-India if it performs pan-India. How can a film be pan-India before it’s even made?"
"Only 1% of it works. And that 1% again starts the whole cycle of pan-India," he points out, citing the examples of KGF and Stree 2. However, Kashyap also notes that terming it into something is where the decline in storytelling comes. He then speaks about how filmmakers get away by stating that the attention span among the viewers has reduced. "It all becomes a formula because everybody is chasing that elusive Rs. 800-900-1000 crore," he says, adding that maybe five films have crossed that mark, while the number of films produced are thousands. Interestingly, the actor-filmmaker had shared that it is the number game that made him quit Bollywood.
In his same interview, Kashyap praised SS Rajamouli for his films. Kashyap said that he was one of the first few people to point out how RRR would break through. He further added that while Baahubali had certain potential, it was too lengthy for many. Nonetheless, the filmmaker notes how every fan across the globe has seen Baahubali.
