The general election dates were announced a few days back. The election in Bengal will go on from April 19 till June 1. The counting is on June 4. The producers of films that were supposed to get released in this period are worried that the election’s effect will be on the box office. Hence, they are rethinking their strategy.
The film Athoi, starring Anirban Bhattacharya and Sohini Sarkar, and directed and acted by Arna Mukhopadhyay, was supposed to be released in the Bengali New Year, but it has been postponed. The production house SVF said that it would be released after the election. The same happened with the film Boomerang, starring Jeet and Rukmini Maitra, which was supposed to be released on May 10.
On Friday, Jeet's production house released a statement saying that Boomerang would be released on June 7. The statement officially said that the decision was taken to give the audience a larger-than-life cinematic experience. The director Souvik Kundu reportedly took a month more to improvise the post-production works.
This year, Eid is on April 10 or 11. The film Mirza, starring Ankush and Oindrila Sen, is scheduled to be released at that time. This is Ankush’s debut as a producer. He is not postponing the release. He is rather assured since the film is coming a week before the election starts.
Srijit Mukherji and producer Firdaus Ul Hasan planned to release Mrinal Sen’s biopic Padataik on the maestro's birthday on May 14. Srijit has not yet taken any decision to postpone the release. He is right now shooting for the Feluda series in Kashmir and will take the final decision after coming back to Kolkata. Chanchal Chowdhury plays Mrinal Sen and Monami Ghosh plays Mrinal’s wife Geeta in the film.
Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy’s film Amar Boss is also supposed to be released in May. Rakhee Gulzar is making a comeback to Bengali films with Amar Boss. The director duo is not concerned about the release and the film will be released according to plan. Kontho and Prakton were two of their films that were released during the election and still their business was not hampered. Hence the duo is confident this time.
