Ever since it was announced that Prashant Neel would head to Tollywood with a film called Salaar that would have Prabhas in the lead, there have been whispers galore about its subject. The filmmaker, on his part, has been tight-lipped about what Salaar is all about, but for quite a while, multiple sources have indicated that the team has not been speaking about the film because it will then become crystal clear that it finds its roots in the Kannada flick Ugramm.

Ugramm was Prashant Neel’s directorial debut, which he produced as well, a mission that was painstaking for him, but was not only critically-acclaimed, but also gave leading man Sriimurali’s career a new lease of life. A gangster tale, Ugramm had Sriimurali play a mechanic with a violent past, who is drawn into a life of violence again. Prashant wanted to revisit the subject at some point with a sequel and sources indicate that Salaar is Ugramm + Ugramm Veeram on a much bigger canvas, since it is backed by Hombale Films. Netizens have also been speculating about this possibility citing similarities between Prabhas from leaked images and Sriimurali from Ugramm.

The film has been announced as a September 28 theatrical release and with only four months to go, the team has not shared anything much with fans who have been waiting eagerly for a glimpse from the film. It is now said that the Salaar teaser will be available along with Prabhas’ Adipurush, which releases in theatres on June 16. And then, it will be revealed if the rumours about Salaar being Ugramm are true after all.

Salaar stars Jagapathi Babu, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Pramod, Shruthi Haasan, Sourav Lokesh, Easwari Rao, among others. Incidentally, Ugramm is currently being remade in Marathi as Raanti, with Sharad Kelkar and Shanvi Srivastava in the lead.
