The Malayalam film industry is riding the wave of popularity with a variety of movies catering to different moods and expectations of a wider audience across the country. On the occasion of the Ramzan holiday, as many as three new Malayalam films were released, each from a different genre. Varshangalkku Shesham is touted to be a pure drama set in a different period, while Aavesham is a comedy-drama and Jai Ganesh is believed to be a superhero movie.

All three films seem to have taken a good start at the Kerala box office. However, the trade is also eager to see how these movies will fare with the non-Malayali audiences outside Kerala. Malayalam movies have found a new level of popularity among audiences of other languages, and the misconception that Malayalam movies are not suitable for mass audiences seems to be vanishing.

Malayalam Cinema's Tamil Nadu

Movie buffs in Tamil Nadu have shown great zeal to embrace new Malayalam movies. Historically, Kerala has been one of the big markets for Tamil movies, but Malayalam movies have rarely found acceptance among Tamil audiences. This trend changed with Manjummel Boys.

Manjummel Boys, written and directed by Chidambaram S. Poduval, created history by becoming the first ever Malayalam film to earn more than Rs 50 crore in Tamil Nadu alone . Several trade experts were quick to comment that this was a one-off incident and it's unlikely to happen again.

However, it's too soon to judge the change that was ushered in by the mammoth success of Manjummel Boys in Tamil Nadu. It remains to be seen whether Varshangalkku Shesham can benefit from the new attitude of mass audiences towards Malayalam movies.

Varshangalkku Shesham plus points

Varshangalkku Shesham, written and directed by Vineeth Sreenivasan, seems to be in a strong position to click with Tamil audiences. Similar to Manjummel Boys, this film also has a strong pop-cultural connection to Tamil cinema.

Based on the trailer, the narrative of Varshangalkku Shesham unfolds on the streets of Kodambakkam, touted to be the heart of the Tamil film industry. It's a period drama with many references to Tamil movie icons, including MG Ramachandran and Rajinikanth. The film also features several primary characters speaking in Tamil, allowing local audiences to connect with the film, much like what worked in the favor of Manjummel Boys.

If Varshangalkku Shesham can manage to generate good word of mouth, it has the potential to recreate the success of Manjummel Boys at the Tamil Nadu box office to some extent.

According to Rakesh Gowthaman, the owner of Chennai's Vettri Theatres, the booking trends seem to be in the movie's favour. "Very good reports after the FDFS of #VarshangalkkuShesham !!! Added another show today evening & opened 9am show over the weekend in the main Screen #Vettri !!!," he tweeted.

Varshangalkku Shesham stars Dhyan Sreenivasan, Pranav Mohanlal, Nivin Pauly, Aju Varghese, and Basil Joseph.
