Wimbledon 2025: Amanda Anisimova stuns Aryna Sabalenka to set up maiden final

Aryna Sabalenka’s Wimbledon jinx continues – the World No 1’s grass court Slam journey ended, yet again, at the semi-final stage. Much fancied to be one of two players in the final on July 13, Sabalenka faced Amanda Anisimova, who, interestingly had a better record against the former. In their 8 previous encounters, Anisimova had won 5, but in recent times, she’d not been at the top of her game, and had even taken a brief break not long ago to focus on her mental health.

Anisimova was, undoubtedly, the underdog, but perhaps not the one who’d effect an upset of the top player in the world. And yet, that’s exactly what she did. Pretty early on, she indicated her intentions, breaking Sabalenka to take the first set. She could not hold on to that momentum in the second, which she conceded to Sabalenka.

In the third and deciding set, Anisimova broke Sabalenka early on, and while the latter broke back later on, it came a tad too late. And then Anisimova served out for the match and booked a spot in her first-ever Grand Slam final. The final score, 6-4 4-6 6-4. 

Anisimova excited about support in Wimbledon

Speaking about Sabalenka after the match, Anisimova, the first American since Serena Williams in the Wimbledon final, said, “She’s an inspiration to me and so many other people. We’ve had so many tough battles, so to come out on top today and be in the final of Wimbledon is incredible. The atmosphere was amazing, I know she’s No. 1 but lots of people were cheering for me.”

Anisimova will meet the winner of the Iga Swiatek vs Belinda Bencic semi-final in the final on July 13. Wimbledon matches are telecast on Star Sports Network, with live streaming on JioHotstar. You can access it with an OTTplay Premium subscription.

Meanwhile, in the men’s singles category, the semi-finals on July 11 will have Carlos Alcaraz against Taylor Fritz, and Jannik Sinner vs Novak Djokovic. Matches will begin at 6 pm on Centre Court.
