Wimbledon 2025: Aryna Sabalenka sets up semi-final clash with Amanda Anisimova

When Aryna Sabalenka and Laura Siegemund got cracking in the first quarter-final of Wimbledon 2025 women’s singles, it seemed that it was just the day that the World No.1 just could not get anything right. Not only were her shots not landing where she wanted them to, but Siegemund also made Sabalenka scamper all around the court, only to then drop a winner where the latter had no chance of a return.

If you look at the score, it would seem that Sabalenka got her act together after dropping the first set. But it was far from it, as Siegemund literally made her sweat. Sabalenka was visibly frustrated with the errors she was making and the cheeky winners that Siegemund converted, and at one point, it seemed unlikely that she’d survive and move ahead to the semi-finals. But win she did, with a score of 4-6 6-2 6-4.

In the second quarter-final, Amanda Anisimova overcame a spirited challenge from Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to prevail 6-1 7-6. This is Anisimova’s fourth victory against Pavlyuchenkova. It also marks her first semi-final appearance since her brief absence from the sport, when she took time off to address mental health concerns and burnout fears. This is Anisimova’s first semi-final at Wimbledon.

Sabalenka vs Anisimova head-to-head

Sabalenka will now play Anisimova in the first semi-final on July 10. The duo has, incidentally, played each other 8 times so far, with Anisimova holding a 5:3 advantage over the World No.1. Their most recent encounter was at the French Open 2025 quarter-final, where Sabalenka prevailed. They’ve played each other largely on clay or hard court surfaces, making this semi-final a first on grass.
