India’s Rohan Bopanna is back for a record 17thmen’s doubles campaign at Wimbledon, a tournament that he’s managed to get to the semi-final stage three times so far (2013, 2015 and 2023). Last year, Rohan and his partner Matthew Ebden had crashed out in the second round and he’s back again, but this time he is playing with Sander Gille in the first round of the tournament.
Bopanna and Gille will take on Tim Putz and Kevin Krawietz in the first round of the men’s doubles on July 2, 2025, with their match scheduled to being at 6.25 pm (IST) on Court 14. The match will be telecast on Star Sports Select 2 and can be streamed on JioHotstar. It will be available on OTTplay Premium as well.
Bopanna is not the only Indian talent in action at Wimbledon on July 2. Yuki Bhambri and Robert Galloway play Manuel Guinard and Romain Arneodo at 5.30 pm on Court 5; Rithvik Bollipalli and Nicolas Barrientos take on David Goffin and Alexandre Muller on Court 8 at 7.35 pm, while Sriram Balaji joins Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela against Aleksandar Kovacevic and Learner Tien at 8.45 pm on Court 10.
Speaking to Prakash Amritraj on the sidelines of the tournament, Bopanna said, “Anytime you get to compete here it’s the Mecca for sport, nothing like it. I don’t know about the weather this time, it’s pretty hot like back in India.” When Amritraj then complimented him on his volley, he added, “I think it translates to the years of practising, you know, serving and volleying. I have a fantastic coach, Scott Davidoff, who has worked with all top doubles’ teams. He is someone who is constantly guiding me with my tennis”
As for his Belgian partner this time, Bopanna said that Gille has a big game. “He likes playing big tennis. And today, especially, playing on the grass court, if you have a partner who can serve big , it’s a good advantage,” he said.
