X&Y out on OTT: D Satya Prakash’s tale of an unborn soul is now streaming

D Satya Prakash’s filmography is testimony that the subjects he chooses veer off the beaten path – there’s always a socially-relevant message too, whether it was his debut Rama Rama Re , or the follow up Ondalla Eradalla. With X&Y, his latest, he marries his trademark philosophical ideas with entertaining story-telling and presents it from the perspective of an innocent soul. In pre-release interviews, Satya had said that he imagined an unborn soul’s perspective of life on earth, like an alien from another planet.

Released in theatres on June 26, the film, though, did not work at the box office, following which it made a swift transition to OTT. As of July 25, X&Y has been available on Sun NXT, with Kannada audio only. The film stars Satya, Atharva Prakash, Sunder Veena, Brinda Acharya, Doddanna, Dharmanna Kadur, Nataraja S Bhat, Harini Srikanth, Ayaana, among others.

In the film, Satya played Kreede, who operates an auto-ambulance for the neighbourhood health clinic. A do-gooder, Kreede, though, does not fit the bill of eligible bachelor even for matrimonial sites, so, his sister’s best efforts to get him ‘settled’ remain futile. Until, of course, the soul of his unborn child decides to pay him a visit. Determined to be born and have a life on earth, the soul seeks permission to head down, meet its parents and ensure they get together.

The body it chooses as its temporary host, a dead vagrant that Kreede believes may have died because of his mistake. Once awake in this new body, and having met ‘appa’, the soul then embarks on a journey to find ‘amma’, unite the duo, while also soaking in the sights and sounds of the world around. With only 3 days to achieve this goal, is the soul successful? What does it make of the confusing events it witnesses – children abandoned in orphanages and elderly parents left to rot in old age homes, among others?

Satya’s film, no doubt, had a pertinent message, but he chose to deliver it with melodrama, which did not gel with the rest of the film, which had a lighter treatment.
