In conversation with OTTplay, Peppin who helmed Yamakaathagi says, “We have set against the backdrop of a village, and presented in a rooted way. There are combinations of genres, and the challenge for us was to make it a singular and coherent experience for the audience.”

The director mentions how in today’s times, the main challenge lies in making the audience come to theatres and watch films, Peppin says he aims to give a theatrical experience. When asked what makes Yamakaathagi a theatrical watch, Peppin says, “We have added many layers visually, and since we combining many genres, we had to be technically aware to deliver it. At the same time, we did not want it to be too cinematic."

Yamakaathagi is set against the backdrop of a home that houses the funeral of a young woman. However, with the spirit not intending to leave the house, the film questions the mystery around it. “The emotions are high at a funeral house as they recuperate from the loss. Each of them might have a different relationship with the dead one. As the corpse is refusing to leave, Yamakaathagi will explore this aspect,” he adds.

The film was shot in a Thanjavur village, with cinematography by Sujith Sarang, with Sreejith Sarang handling the editing and coloring. Actors Roopa Koduvayur, Geetha Kailasam, Narendra Prasath, and others are part of the cast. “We wanted more characters because it is about a bereaving house. About 90% of artists are from a theatre background, which helped me immensely as a debutant director. They will give their best once you tell them what are your expectations,” Peppin mentions.

As he calls himself a commercial cinema lover, Peppin says that however executing a cinema with commercial sensibilities is hard to pull off the first time. “I am from a village, and I like to begin with my strong suits, and roots. As a director, when I have clarity, I can be supportive to my story. Having said that, the film is balanced.”

Yamakaathagi has music by Jecin George. Produced by Srinivasarao Jalakam, and co-produced by Ganapathi Reddy, a release date for the film is yet to be announced.
