Yevade Subramanyam remains one of the most iconic films in Telugu cinema. This coming-of-age drama holds a special place in the industry for multiple reasons. It marked the directorial debut of star filmmaker Nag Ashwin and also introduced Vijay Deverakonda to Telugu audiences. With Nani playing the lead role, the film continues to be celebrated even a decade after its release.
To commemorate the film’s 10th anniversary, the makers, Swapna Cinema, who also made their production debut with Yevade Subramanyam, organized a small get-together. Speaking about the film, director Nag Ashwin shared an interesting anecdote, revealing that he had initially narrated two other stories to producers Swapna and Priyanka Dutt, both of which were rejected.
"As two of my ideas were turned down, I narrated Yevade Subramanyam quite reluctantly, but they loved it and gave me the green light," Ashwin recalled.
The film is also personally significant for Nag Ashwin as he fell in love with Priyanka Dutt during its making, and the two eventually tied the knot after its release. As the film reaches its milestone 10th year, Ashwin has announced that this romantic drama will be re-released in theaters on March 21, 2025.
"The subject was ahead of its time, and Yevade Subramanyam will be even easier to connect with in today's world. It will attract a lot of young audiences," he added.
Vijay Deverakonda, who played a pivotal role in the film, gained immense recognition after its release. Speaking about his inclusion, Nag Ashwin mentioned that Nani was highly supportive of casting a fresh face in a major role—even one that dominated his character in the first half.
Yevade Subramanyam follows the story of an ambitious man who prioritizes money over human relationships. His perspective on life changes after his close friend, played by Vijay Deverakonda, passes away, setting him on a transformative journey.
The film, made on a modest budget of ₹3 crore, went on to collect ₹18 crore at the box office, proving its massive success. Today, Nag Ashwin is a powerhouse in Indian cinema with blockbuster hits like Mahanati and Kalki 2898 AD. He is currently working on the second installment of Kalki, which will go on floors soon.
For now, fans can look forward to Yevade Subramanyam’s grand re-release on March 21, 2025. Stay tuned for more updates!
