After much anticipation and a long break following the shocking Season 2 ending, HBO has finally announced that the Emmy-winning series Euphoria will return for a third season in April 2026. A first look at the show and important plot information revealed by creator Sam Levinson accompanied the announcement, which was made during an HBO Max presentation in London. Fans in India may watch the highly awaited new season on JioHotstar (OTTplay Premium).

Series background and lengthy hiatus

It quickly rose to the position of most-watched non-fantasy series on HBO, following the turbulent lives of high school students as they deal with issues of drug abuse, trauma, identity, and complicated relationships. With Season 2's finale in February 2022 and Season 3's premiere more than four years away, fans will finally get to catch up with their favourite characters.

Season 3 will take place five years after the events of Season 2, according to Levinson, who is also returning as director, executive producer, and writer, in an interview with Variety. "Five years felt like a natural place because if they’d gone to college, they’d be out of college at that time," he stated, outlining the characters' whereabouts in early adulthood.

Rue Bennett's Season 3 plotline

Season 2's Rue Bennett (Zendaya) finds the character "south of the border in Mexico, in debt to Laurie [Martha Kelly], trying to come up with some very innovative ways to pay it off."

The impulsive high school lovers, Nate Jacobs (Jacob Elordi) and Cassie Howard (Sydney Sweeney), have now become engaged and settled in the suburbs. Levinson confirmed a major season event: "Cassie and Nate do in fact get married. I’m confirming it. And I promise that it will be an unforgettable night." Cassie is characterised as "very addicted to social media and envious of what appear to be the big lives that all of her high school classmates are living."

Jules Vaughn's career anxieties

Art school student Jules Vaughn (Hunter Schafer), who has been on and off with Rue, is "very nervous about having a career as a painter and trying to avoid responsibility at all costs."

Played by Alexa Demie, Maddy Perez is presently juggling her "own side hustles" with her job as a talent agent for a manager in Hollywood.

Lexi Howard's new role and star cameo

The ambitious playwright, portrayed by Maude Apatow, is now working as an assistant to a showrunner, played by true icon Sharon Stone, a new cast member.

With Zendaya, Hunter Schafer, Eric Dane, Jacob Elordi, Sydney Sweeney, Alexa Demie, and Maude Apatow among the many A-listers returning, the show will also feature a cameo from Colman Domingo, who will play Ali, Rue's sponsor. Both Chloe Cherry (Faye) and Martha Kelly (Laureline) are now regulars on the show.

Notable new cast members

Several notable newcomers will be joining the cast in Season 3. In addition to Danielle Deadwyler, former NFL star Marshawn Lynch, director Eli Roth, Grammy-winning singer Rosalía, Trisha Paytas, Natasha Lyonne, and others, including Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Toby Wallace, are also joining Stone.

A fresh poster hinting at the season's potential focus accompanied the formal announcement. The photo features Rue (Zendaya) perched atop a battered pickup truck. Perched on the steering wheel, she wears her trademark Converse trainers and leans back in the passenger seat, smiling slightly as if she knows what's happening. The general style is rough and sun-kissed, giving the impression that the setting is not your typical high school.

Character absences and tribute to Angus Cloud

The departure of Barbie Ferreira (Kat Hernandez) from the series in August 2022 and the confirmation by Storm Reid that her character Gia will not be appearing in the current season are notable absences from the returning cast. Tragically, Angus Cloud (Fezco) passed away in July 2023, and the series will honour his memory.

Levinson's discoveries have heightened anticipation for the show's return. The upcoming season will go deeper into the characters' lives as they leave the safety net of high school and face adulthood, promising an even more emotional experience.
