Like a Chittagong orchid, the movie takes time to blossom - but when it does, it's beautiful. And pleases a certain master.


In a country in which what we usually get by way of historical pictures is the blustering epic melodrama, Chittagong is a rare and beautifully realized miniature told from the viewpoint of a teenager.



Director Pain and his co-writer Shonali Bose create a taut narrative and the film is a treat for lovers of quality cinema who dig their socio-political dramas.

Chittagong is a textured film, but too many songs and an overlong narrative causes your attention to dither towards the end.

The film fails in the second half because there are no lump-in-the-throat moments; nor is there any shock and awe.


The star, even after 50-plus years on screen, is still incredibly enterprising and is raring to go. This time, he takes on the Hollywood genre of suspense thrillers and pulls it off reasonably well.



The only people who should be offended by the film ought to be those who don't want to see Kamal Haasan in every frame of the over two and a half hour long movie.

A true critic understands duality. That it is possible for the film to be good and bad at the same time, depending on who's watching it.

If you are an action junkie and if you have peaked on Sylvester Stallone’s Rambo-series, then our desi Commando, is what you will term paisa-vasool entertainment.


The opening sequence has some jaw-dropping moves which instantly tells us that this man could be the real legatee of the Sty Stallone-Arnie-Diesel-Statham tradition.

Directed by Deven Bhojani, Commando 2 revolves around the story of a man, skilled in hand-to-hand combat and weaponry, who sets out on a mission to eradicate black money.

Aatma is not a full-fledged horror film with ugly demons and gruesome deaths. It attempts to play with your mind and even succeeds, though partially. 

<i>Aatma</i> could have been a true scare-fest. But it winds down to being well begun,half done.


Aatma promises to be a different kind of ghost story but becomes unintentionally comedic. However if Bipasha Basu in a slinky negligee is your reason for going to a film, there's plenty of that.



It recycles familiar horror movie imagery to little impact.

‘Ajeeb Daastaans’, as the title suggests, is heavily invested in the ‘big reveal’ or rendering shock value to all its stories—and there are four of them—and the anthology opens with the first snippet ‘Majnu’ by Shashank Khaitan.

There's a kernel of an idea in Ajeeb Daastaans that's definitely worth exploring. But the writing predominantly comes from a place of blinkered privilege. Geeli Pucchi, directed by Ghaywan, is the exception in the quartet.

For an anthology aiming to juxtapose a series of contrasting stories in a bid to create a thematically cohesive narrative, Netflix’s Ajeeb Daastaans is earnest, if not flawless

The common modus operandi seems to be a subversion of our expectations at the end, even if the effectiveness of this strategy wavers.
