One of the earliest real life hero movies was Raja Harishchandra (1913), directed by Dadasaheb Phalke and based on the Hindu legend of King Harishchandra, who was known for his honesty and virtue. Some of the most popular films from this era include Bhagat Singh (1940), Jhansi Ki Rani (1953), and Mangal Pandey (1954). These films played an important role in instilling a sense of patriotism. In the 1960s and 1970s, there was a shift towards making films about real-life heroes from other walks of life, such as sportspeople, scientists, and social activists. Some of the most popular films from this era include Dhyan Chand (1968) and Birbal (1966).
Making films on Indian freedom fighters saw a comeback in popularity in the 1980s and 1990s. Shaheed (1982), Gandhi (1982), The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002), Rang De Basanti (2006), and Lagaan (2001) are a few of the most well-known films.
More recently, films such as Neerja (2016), Padman (2018), Shershaah (2021), and Major (2022) are the more well-known releases.
