Hollywood may have mastered the art of superhero movies with popular movies like Spider-Man and The Dark Knight, but new Indian filmmakers such as Basil Joseph have proven that India is not too far behind.

The 1987 action movie, Mr. India told the story of a young violinist who uses the power of invisibility to take down a ruthless criminal whose aim is to spread chaos. The movie is one of the earliest superhero movies in the country and became a popular hit all over the country. Although it had an underwhelming box office run, the 1989 film, Toofan, featured Amitabh Bachchan as a crossbow-wielding superhero.

The 2005 psychological thriller Anniyan, starring Vikram in the lead role, is another movie with superhero elements as the protagonist suffers from dissociative identity disorder and moonlights as a deadly vigilante. Bhavesh Joshi Superhero, directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, and Hero, starring Sivakarthikeyan are other superhero movies that tread the vigilante path.

Vasan Bala directed the 2018 film Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota on a shoestring budget, a superhero movie about a young boy diagnosed with a condition that makes him numb to pain. The movie was received well by critics. In 2021, Tovino Thomas starred as the titular superhero in the Malayalam superhero movie, Minnal Murali. The movie, released on Netflix, was both commercially and critically acclaimed.
