From book to film, did The Godfather get into your favourites list?

Based on Mario Puzio’s bestselling novel The Godfather, the namesake 1972 American crime movie was directed by Francis Ford Coppola who helped co-write the screenplay of the movie with Puzo.

Before it became popular, the novel's rights were purchased for $80,000 by Paramount Pictures. Celebrated movie stars such as Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Richard Castellano, Robert Duvall, Sterling Hayden, John Marley, Richard Conte, and Diane Keaton played important roles in the film.

Deemed as one of the most influential movies in the gangster genre, the film won Best Picture, Best Actor (Brando), and Best Adapted Screenplay at the 45th Academy Awards (for Puzo and Coppola).

Pacino, Caan, and Duvall for Best Supporting Actor, and Coppola for Best Director were among the seven other Oscar nominees.
